Choosing to have a magician entertain at your party or function
is a great idea, yet some people are unsure as to whether it is the right
thing to do. They are concerned that the magician might not fit in or that
he will in some way get in the way or interfere with the proceedings.
In fact a magician can work at any function and if he is truly professional
he will understand the format of the evening and be able to work with you
and the organisers to blend in perfectly.
Parties and Functions can typically be grouped into simple classifications.
On the one hand it is possible to group them by type i.e. Annual Dinners,
Birthday Parties, Banquets, Bar Mitzvahs, Weddings
etc. However it is more useful to think of them in terms of format.
Formal Functions
This include Ceremonial Banquets, Annual Dinners, Awards Ceremonies, Sports
and Football Club Dinners, Charity Balls, Mayoral Banquets, Rotary &
Round Table Dinners, School Proms and of course Masonic Ladies Nights.
These kinds of functions share some common factors.
They are typically black-tie events
There is a top table
Wine will be “taken” through the meal
There are speeches after the meal
There are raffles and possibly prizes and awards given
Games may be played for example the ubiquitous “Heads & Tales”
At these functions a magician can certainly entertain during the drinks
reception, but beware if the bar area is small he may not have room to perform.
A very good time to use a magician is throughout the meal. A professional
entertainer will know when is a good time to entertain a table, dipping
in between courses and working around the waiting staff.
At many of these functions in general and Masonic ones in particular there
will be a MC or Master Of Ceremonies. Many organisers of Masonic functions
are cautious about allowing entertainers during the meal as they will frequently
“take wine” and have many speeches. This should not be a problem
with a professional entertainer who will square things with the MC beforehand.
Another great idea for these evenings is to have a photographer present
who can photograph the guests as they arrive. They have made an effort to
put on their finery so why not give the opportunity to portrait of themselves
dressed up to the nines!
Amazing Magic can organise such a photographer on your behalf. If there
are sufficient guests booked this can often be done at no cost to the organisers.
Amazing Magic always recommends Portland
Studios who are experts in this kind of work.
Weddings are unique events and to learn how to add magic to your special
day then we recommend The Wedding
Magician
Semi-Formal Functions
These are the kind of events where whilst the is a sit-down meal there is
little or no formal business such as speeches and raffles to contend with.
Birthday Parties, Anniversary Celebrations, Company Functions, Staff Dinners
etc are good examples of such events.
Here, the magician can really make the event for you. What these events
often lack is a cohesive force to bring folks together. Yes those celebrating
may say a few words at the beginning or end of the evening but most of the
time your guests may be left at a table with someone the hardly know or
even worse dislike.
Let your magician entertain your guests at will – he will spot those
tables needing a lift and will make their evening special.
Informal Functions
Some people choose to have very little formal happen at their celebrations.
This is perfectly natural as many people are self conscious and just want
to relax and enjoy themselves. So at Birthday and Engagement Parties, Christenings
and Anniversaries or just a BBQ in the Garden a magician can again be the
common factor for the evening.
Your magician will Mix & Mingle with your guests going from group to
group giving each a short magic show. He can even offer a short “Set
piece” or cabaret spot at some point to add to the mystery.
For all functions a great DJ or even a live band or tribute swinger is a
perfect way to end the festivities. Amazing Magic recommends Noss
Ryan Discos and Allied Entertainments
who have a range of entertainers to suit any event.
Whoever you choose to entertain at your function, make sure you are comfortable
with their style and the person themselves, but more importantly make sure
you check out their credentials!
